Data is gold to any organization, therefore data portability is a critical metric when evaluating your cloud consciousness.
Because the cloud implies flexibility, being able to retrieve data and applications from a Cloud Service Provider (CSP) is vital to any enterprise.
If a CSP uses proprietary software and formats to store an organization’s data or applications, it may prove difficult to retrieve applications and data in a usable format.
And, as you know, we just cannot have that.
Cloud Consciousness And Data Portability
Here is your checklist for choosing your CSP:
- To what extent is the data portable?
- In what format is the data generally returned?
- What other return formats are available?
- What kind of system is required to read the data?
- How quickly can data be retrieved and delivered to the customer?
- To What extent is an application built in the cloud portable?
- In what format is the application returned?
- If data or application is not portable, what other options are provided?
- How can customers plan for data and application portability?
- In what cases has portability been required?
- How has the CSP managed the process?
- What tools or resources should be in place to maximize the ability to move data and applications?
- How can data or applications be moved to a different vendor?
- What costs are associated with moving data and applications?
- Which proprietary products are used by the CSP?
- In the case of a change in ownership of any proprietary product initially offered by the CSP, what plans are in place to ensure continued service?
- How could the CSP notify the organization of the change and any implications for service?
From the perspective of cloud consciousness and data portability, how conscious are you?
